Problem Statement

Rocket Lawyer needed a mobile-first proof of concept to showcase at SXSW, translating complex legal services into an intuitive MVP experience under an extremely tight deadline.

Challenges, Opportunities & Goals

Challenge: Deliver a mobile MVP under a tight SXSW deadline while simplifying complex legal services.

Opportunity: Position mobile as a core entry point within Rocket Lawyer’s broader legal relationship management ecosystem.

Goal: Launch a testable proof of concept that could validate direction and set the foundation for future product development.

Design Research & Planning

Cross Functional Alignment

  • Facilitated all-day discovery session with PMs, engineers, and fellow designers.
  • Mapped end-to-end journeys across users, staff, and external providers to visualize friction points.
  • Documented delays and hand-offs that created breakdowns in Q&A and document review.
  • Identified critical bottlenecks that directly informed the next round of wireframes and flows.

We translated Rocket Lawyer’s complex legal services into clear mobile journeys by running intensive workshops with PMs and engineers. Early research and mapping aligned priorities, reduced risk, and set a foundation for rapid design execution.

Multi-Stakeholder Journey Mapping

To bridge early discovery into actionable design, I created a multi-swimlane journey map covering users, Rocket Lawyer staff, attorneys, and operations.

This visualization highlighted dependencies, surfaced hidden failure paths, and aligned the entire cross-functional team around shared priorities.

It served as the “single source of truth” for deciding which flows to refine into detailed wireframes and prototypes.

  • Mapped multi-stakeholder touchpoints (users, staff, attorneys, operations) to reveal interdependencies.
  • Exposed critical hand-offs where delays or breakdowns most often occurred.
  • Clarified failure paths (e.g. missed hand-offs, “no show” scenarios) so edge cases weren’t overlooked.

Design Execution

Clickable Prototype Screens

To validate our design direction, I built an early clickable prototype in HTML. This allowed the team to click through core legal tasks as if they were using the real app.

By making the flows interactive, we were able to surface navigation issues early, refine copy, and confirm alignment across product, engineering, and design before committing to full development.

  • Captured the onboarding flow and first-use journey for new users.
  • Simulated key legal tasks in a way that was approachable for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Provided a shared reference point for engineering estimates and scope discussions.
  • Served as an alignment tool with leadership, reducing ambiguity before build.

We simplified complex legal workflows into a mobile-first flow under a tight SXSW deadline. The prototype aligned stakeholders quickly and created a foundation that still informs Rocket Lawyer’s app today.

Collaborative Iteration

As the prototype matured, we moved beyond screen-level mockups and printed full sequences of the app’s flows.

Posting them in shared spaces turned abstract wireframes into tangible conversations. This physical setup gave stakeholders a clear view of the end-to-end journey, encouraged impromptu feedback, and helped the team align quickly on priorities.

  • Made flows accessible to non-design stakeholders through large-scale printouts.
  • Encouraged cross-functional discussions in real time, without needing a digital demo.
  • Allowed annotations and quick iterations directly on the walls, accelerating refinement.

Final Product Evolution

After my MVP prototype was tested and handed off, Rocket Lawyer’s design team took over refinement and scaling.

While the visuals have since evolved, the flows and structural decisions from my original work remain visible in the current app.

This continuity demonstrates how the foundation I designed endured beyond the proof-of-concept phase.

  • Current app-store version still reflects the journey structures established in the MVP.
  • Later design teams layered in polish, features, and updated visual style.
  • My early prototype provided the core DNA that guided the product’s long-term direction.

Successful Outcomes

The MVP achieved its purpose — proving the viability of a mobile-first Rocket Lawyer experience and providing a foundation for future product growth.
